Hot beverages for cold days? Great for gift-giving too. Warm, satisfying and delish!

Hot beverages take the chill off those cold winter days and nights. Watch the winter winds, rain, and snow outside, while sipping on a nice hot cup of cozy… Ahhh yes, good to the last drop.

Enjoy a cup relaxing by the fireplace, with a good book, or in front of the TV with the kids and a blanket. Tasty, satisfying comfort for all. Yes, please.

The following recipes are updated from the 70’s. Our kids enjoyed their share and now the grandkids keep warm and toasty on dark wintery days and nights.

Hot Mulled Cider or Tea

  • 1 Quart Apple Cider
  • 2 Whole Allspice
  • 2 Whole Cloves
  • 1 – 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 4 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Orange, Thinly Sliced With the Peal
  • 1/2 Cup Orange Juice

In a 2-quart saucepan, combine all ingredients. Heat until cider starts steaming. (Microwave in a glass bowl, on high for 8 – 10 minutes.) Serves 4 – 5.

TIP: Try this mix with hot tea instead of hot cider. Less sugar consumed.

Friendship Tea

This tea can be made ahead of time and stored in a container as a dry mix. It’s ready for the asking, to take off the chill and soothe holiday stresses. It also makes a nice gift to give during the holidays.

  • 1 Cup instant tea
  • 2 Cups Tang
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 package Wyler’s Lemonade Mix, or 1/2 Cup Countrytime Lemonade Mix, or 1 Package of Koolade Lemonade
  • 3 Teaspoons of Cinnamon
  • 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cloves
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Allspice
  • Small Cinnamon Red Hots Candy Pieces, ” or Hot Tamales”

Mix all together and store in a container with a tight lid. Serve to taste with a few red hots in each cup. Approximately, 2 heaping teaspoons per cup of hot water.

Spiced Hot Chocolate

This hot chocolate is always a hit with the family. It can be served a few different ways to delight your little ones. Again this mix can be stored in a container, ready on demand by the smaller members of your family.

I now use a pre-mixed chocolate milk or hot chocolate mix. I then tweak a bit for better flavor. Before I mixed Hershey’s Chocolate Powder with powdered dry milk or creamer.

  • 1 Cup Chocolate Milk Mix
  • 1/2 Cup Dry Creamer
  • 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Mix all together well. Yes, the vanilla will mix into the dry mix. Store in a covered container.

Stir 2 heaping teaspoons into 1 cup hot water.

Add marshmallows, or mounds of whipped cream, a dusting of cinnamon, and a peppermint candy cane as a stir stick. Even add a fresh green mint sprig, for more holiday color.

For the adults, add a slight sprinkle of coarse salt on top of the whipped cream, in addition to the cinnamon dusting. (It gives it that salty-sweet taste.)

Garnish with a sprig of mint and a cinnamon stick. Cuddle up on the couch and enjoy.
